The film stars of the 30’s and 40’s removed stage makeup with Nivea, and our Grandmother’s loved their Ponds Cold Cream as much as a kid loves ice cream. Those products, the icons of their time, still sell well today to millions of women around the globe. As skin care technology increases and as women get more interested in what’s in their products and what they put on their skin, the list of iconic products grows more sophisticated. Here, we celebrate and give mention to some of the best of the best!
A few years ago I asked a dermatologist what he thought was the best skin cream. His answer was that he refused to recommend one because there were too many varying factors and he didn’t want to “go there”. However, he did offer to tell me what he considered the two most important things in anti-aging skin care. Number one: sunblock – no surprise there. The other? Liquid vitamin C, and he went on to say that it must be in an opaque jar or encapsulated, because like an uncovered glass of orange juice that loses its potency quickly vitamin C evaporates if not properly stored.
In 2005, Skinceuticals created one of the icons of liquid vitamin C with their C E Ferulic. More than just vitamin C, this is a potent formula of 15% pure L-ascorbic acid, 1% alpha tocopherols along with ferulic acid, a plant based antioxidant. This powerful treatment should be applied in the morning before any of your other serums or creams. It enhances the protection against UVA/UVB rays, stimulates collagen production, and evens out skin tones, just to name a few of its benefits.
Like my morning coffee, I don’t start my day without this stuff!

Free Radicals: During the Woodstock generation the term referred to a group you didn’t want your daughter hanging out with because you were afraid they’d damage her mind. Today, we don’t want them around because they’ll damage the skin cells. The prevention? Antioxidants! We want lots of ’em and in high potency. They’re found in a number of natural substances, such as fruits and vegetables, and used in many skin care products.
Prevage-MD by Allergan (the Botox people) contains 1% idebone (i-dee-bonay) which is one of the strongest antioxidants out there. At this dosage, you need to get it from your doctor, though you don’t need a prescription. Lesser doses are sold in the department stores, and are also very effective. Prevage antioxidant cream reduces dryness and the appearance of fine lines, as well as improving hydration and skin tone. Since it has a yellow color that shows slightly on my pale skin, I use it at night only, but darker skins can use it twice a day.

I admit it, I’m a rebel at heart, and when I learned that something was found to be effective with an “off-label use” my interest was piqued. Ok, I’m not willing to put Preparation H on my face, but when I found out some years ago that a miracle stretch mark cream was being used on the face to erase wrinkles, I had to try it. Enter StriVectin-SD, which has now become one of the best selling skin care creams around the world. Who knew? It contains their Striadril Complex that stimulates collagen synthesis which reduces stretch marks as well as wrinkles, fine lines and crows’ feet; as well as peptides that restore elasticity. Their advertising line “Better than Botox?” is a stretch, but the cream really does work. They guarantee it!

Clean…really clean and exfoliated skin is one of the keys to a great looking complexion. Not only does clean skin look better “naked”, but unclogged pores are less likely to become enlarged, makeup goes on smoother, and skin care products are absorbed better. In 2005, Clarisonic came out with their Sonic Skin Cleansing System which was voted Best of the Best in Skin Inc, in 2008, and Best of Sephora in 2007 and 2008. It’s even one of Oprah’s Favorite Things. They use patented sonic technology that gently yet deeply cleans pores without abrasion or harsh chemicals, and removes makeup a lot better than manual cleansing. The original unit is white, which is still sold, but I’m partial to the pink version, and a portion of the sales of the pink one are donated for breast cancer research. So clean up your act!

Dermaquest creams aren’t a household name yet, but they do have a core of followers, many of whom are beauty editors, and I’m one of them. Dermaquest Peptide Mobilizer, their most popular anti-aging product and is a peptide lover’s dream. Plenty of skin creams tout their use of peptides, but Dermaquest’s products have a higher concentration and more of them than most others. The combination of both biopeptides and neuropeptides increases tissue regeneration, stimulates collagen production, plumps and smoothes wrinkles and increases hydration.
